Right to Rent status of tenant's EU boyfriend

I imagine if female vacates and male partner remains in situ - he becomes an illegal squatter and that would be a Police matter - hence that and the benefit issue would need to be explored in a face to face discussion with both parties.

The male needs to understand that he will be expected to contribute to household outgoings if he is a full time resident - even if only to the extent of making up the shortfall due to benefit cessation.

Female also needs to understand that once she comes off benefits - any relationship breakdown may then need her to become a new claimant - with all the nightmare delays of getting payments started - hence she may then need to go in to debt to ensure rent etc continues to be paid.

Clearly a not uncommon scenario in modern life - but one which needs monitoring. A frank discussion with tenant before male "moves in " may be a good tactic so she can evaluate the risks to her personal finances overall.

In fact any notification of a "change in circumstances" for a benefit claimant tends to automatically shut down all benefit payments while a review is conducted at a snail's pace.

Thanks that's good advice. Will take your points on board when I discuss with her.
