I do understand your view Ryan - though I lean toward avoiding giving them an inch thereby perhaps prompting them to take a mile as they say.
They were very precipitate to vacate just for one day's lack of boiler function when alternate heating was provided.
Home owners in same scenario would not jump straight in to a hotel (assuming that is what happened).
Sounds like tenants are either very naïve about their rights - or are chancers who need stopping in their tracks.
You are stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Dont give them what they want and the relationship breaks down and it will cost you money to replace them
Give in and it will cost you money and they may continue to try it on.
All for doing the right thing..........
Depends how one sees "right thing" where daily rental charge is £18. That would be my limit for compensation
We have been in this position and unfortunately our goodwill gesture was interpreted as us being a 'soft touch'. If you do pay, sadly I would bet you have more breakdowns & maintenance issues that warrant further goodwill gestures.

Really just stand your ground, your tenants want Xmas on you. Also consider firing your agent for offering them compensation in the first place, your agent is weak and not done the job correctly if you give the hint there might be money for the tennants to make a fuss they will try to take you for more.
Sack the agent and stand firm.
Unfortunately by making what I think most on here would agree with is an unfair demand on behalf of the tenant as every effort was made at the time I would just call their bluff and say as your very generous offer of £100 was snubbed, there won't be a second one made and you're withdrawing the first.
It was a very kind offer along with the heaters being available that has been seen as weakness, which tells you all you need to know about the mindset of your tenant. It will be interesting to see what happens so please keep us updated OP?
Check what your tenancy agreement says, I expect it to say if the property could not be occupied then rent is not due which would imply the maximum compensation is one nights rent. The property was capable of being occupied so your offer was generous and if you are able to refer to the tenancy agreement it may help them to understand that their demands are unreasonable
Goodness, this is a far from an ideal situation.
I rather like the comment around daily rent being £18. I think the answer to this is possibly framing. I would personally point out that they pay £18 a day and chose to leave even though you have acted quickly and decisively to rectify the issue they had. I would emphasise that you want to be reasonable and so they can have the £18 plus a bottle of prosecco for the inconvenience. I would urge them not to escalate an unfortunate incident for which no one was to blame into a lose/lose situation.
I would put all this in friendly and calm language, preferably hand written yourself and forwarded on through your letting agent. That way no one can be misrepresented.

I was in a similar situation. I went to the police as the demands for money and threats etc became more and more aggressive when I didn't pay. It's extortion. You need to go through the correct channels and tell the tenants that they need to go through the correct channels. Otherwise you are opening yourself up to a possible situation where they will demand more and more, as they could interpret it that you are accepting liability. That's my opinion anyway. I hope things work out.
