Does anyone offer contents insurance for just a few months?

My Google-fu has let me down: does anyone know of a company that offers home contents insurance for just a few months at a time? Or alternatively, one that doesn't charge you if you take out a year and cancel early?

I just need insurance for a flat I'm living in for a few months, and it's proving harder than I thought - even though I can't see how it's necessarily a riskier proposition than a policy that lasts a full year.

Hi Rob,

I had a recent experience. I am executor of my Aunt's will, and had to call her contents insurance to advise them of her death. The policy had another two months to run, and I told them that we had no need for contents insurance after 1Sep12 because there would be no contents left in the property. they sent us a rebate of about 5% for a month.

I assume your contents will need to be insured in the next place you move to, and I am sure the annual policy will just take a change of address and continue the policy. Try to find one that doesn't charge a zillion percent APR for monthly direct debits, and it will probably work out cheaper than trying to find short term contents insurance.

Thank you Gerry. My problem, as I should have explained, is that I'm going to be bouncing between the UK and abroad for quite a while afterwards so I won't have another address to transfer the insurance to.

I think my best bet might be to find an insurer who, like you say, doesn't charge a fortune for monthly direct debits, and has the lowest cancellation fee I can find. Does anyone know if an insurance broker would be likely to help with these kind of things? It might be quicker than trawling through every insurer's T&Cs

Rob,
My aunt was paying Lloyds TSB about £60 a year for contents only insurance, if that helps.
