Abolish Article 4 restrictions on HMO's

Responsible department: Department for Communities and Local Government

This petition has been formed to rally for the abolishment of the use of Article 4 directives to stop properties being used as Houses in Multiple Occupation. Since its introduction these measures have been used by local councils to effectively ban new HMO's and has had a drastic effect on the one area of the housing market that has otherwise remained bouyant despite the recession. The measures have been put in place without listening to property professionals who all disagree that it is a good thing. This legislation is not only bad for the economy as a whole but also is also unfairly labeling students and those on low income as a sub-class that are prone to anti social behaviour and is potentially forcing them into substandard accommodation in areas they do not want to live.

    Signed.

Not for my own self interest but can not understand where the Government think that Under 35's will be able to live on the "Shared Room" rate they provide for LHA considering low social housing, unemployment figures are not very good and our economy perhaps not in a strong position to change that.

I first think government is trying to make people live in HMO's due to changes and then find they are trying to ban new HMO's it does not make sense.

Excellent. The petition got 184 signitures in just one day. Many investors are spreading the news and ask for support. So far the following organisations/websites have been contacted:

    - local newspaper

    - RLA

    - NLA (tbc)

    - The student room (I will post there. The forum has nearly 1million subscribers)

    - spareroom

    - easyroom

    - property118

    - Tycoon forum

Please spread the word and share ideas how we can reach out to more people. To get to 100.000 signitures is not an easy task. Maybe letting agents could contact their LL and tenants.

Done - Although I wish the petition had been written with a bit more care and less haste!

We'll send out to our students... They campaigned against it in Nottingham.
