Former Prime Minister, Tony Blair has set out the need for a radical departure from the status quo as outlined in a new paper "Home Truths: A Progressive Vision of Housing Policy in the 21st Century".The report, from the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, sets out 5 principles to solving the housing crisis including:> Rent caps> A new annual property tax> A new sovereign property fund to help councils build. Councils would be given enhanced powers of compulsory purchase to buy under-used properties. It is also calling for minimum rent periods of three years with caps on rent rises and stronger protection against eviction.Blair says the Government has lost sight of solving the housing crisis, concentrating too much on Brexit.Source article READ THE FULL REPORTWhat do you think of these suggestions?SEE ALSO - New Conservative controls for the PRSUP NEXT - Institutional investors set to revolutionise private rental sectorDON'T MISS - Budget 2017: Landlord & property perspectiveNOW WATCH:

There's nothing I want to hear from Mr Bliar I'm afraid. He had his chance and did very little (in the UK anyway) in his time.
Nobody gives a shit about Tony's opinions any more. He's a *moderator content removed* and needs to keep his head down and his views to himself.
I can't see why this disingenuous *moderator content removed* (a person who encourages or advocates aggression towards other countries or groups) feels he even has the right to comment. The guy is a compulsive *moderator content removed* (fibber) and should be behind bars TBH..... in my humble opinion of course. Clearly the moderator is a Blairite.
Rent caps and compulsory purchase...progressive. Oh dear. More belief that government knows best. More proof he doesn't understand how markets work. The "global change" that is needed is to keep governments OUT of markets and to make lying politicians accountable.
Blair is obviously short of oxygen as is Property Tribes.
This is the man that caused the housing crisis! !!
It was he that flung open the borders to (*Moderator note: content removed*) from the the EU
Remove all the EU migrants and the housing crisis disappears.
He did not have to allow the A8 countries unfettered access to the UK.
It was a political decision to rub the Tories noses into diversity
Ultimately that policy backfired as it was immigration which caused most to vote out.
It was the principal reason I voted out.
The nation state should have control of its borders.
Free movement was always going to affect the SE
It has led to S24 and all the other punitive measures against LL.
If TB gets his way even more LL will leave the sector.
Have carried out 5 evictions I can assure his Tonyness that it is very difficult to get rid of tenants who don't pay their rent.
To make it even harder will cause me to sell up.
So that is 10 tenants homeless.
There is a LL on my site who is having to sell up due to mortgage term expiring and because of the PRA cannot obtain a remortgage.
That will mean 3 homeless tenants.
TB is an idiot and should keep his mouth shut.
He has caused massive distress to LL and tenants alike.
Political ideology has left the wreckage that is now the housing and PRS market.
The price will need to be paid
That means building everywhere
The NIMBY will become a rare breed.
The Tony Blair Institute for Global Change???? Haha, sounds wonderful!
It's a bit weird that Cherie Blair was (and maybe still is?) a campaigner to abolish S24, and they both own a high value BTL portfolio of 10 houses and 27 flats.
Maybe they've made some changes to their own positions regarding S24, where rent caps, annual property charges and three year ASTs won't affect them.
Anyone got an updated record of the Blairs property affairs rather than this one from 06/10/16 : https://www.theguardian.com/money/2016/oc...erie-booth.
The report says levels of homeownership are at record lows. In reality levels of home ownership in Britain at least have dropped slightly from record highs, and are far higher than they were in my youth. That is the sort of truthfulness I expect from Tony Blair, so it seems he has set the standards for his institute.
The land value tax proposed has some attractive features. The values and thus tax would be highest in London which would then be able to pay for its own local housing crisis. However the same reason is why it will never be implemented. They party that did so would lose support in London, whilst not gaining much elsewhere.
