    Announcement - Paul Barrett

Due to numerous complaints by community members, and our own observations & concerns, I have decided to ban Paul Barrett from this site for one month.

This is because of commentary by him that we deemed inappropriate to this community on a number of levels.

I will be contacting Paul privately to discuss his further involvement here, when he has had time to reflect on his contributions and the way he interacts here.

We take this opportunity to apologise to the community for any offence which might have been caused.

I was wondering if he had loaded the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back in some recent posts.

    Nick

Can you please be more specific as to why he has been banned?

In the run up to the Brexit referendum some of his comments could be considered racist. Personally he has never offended me and he does seem to rant on and on about the same points in a rather repitive manner.

I do not know how old he is, but I have always pictured him as Alf Garnett from 'till death us do part'

If you can expand on the precise nature of the complaints, it would be a timely warning for the future to other angry posters.

    thanks

I disagree with him on most things but as Voltaire said I will defend his right to say it to the death. He isn't inciting anyone to do bad things to others and I would think most intelligent people will ignore his racist,  misogynistic views. I have read some of his posts in  the few minutes it took for mods to take then down and they are not nice.  But the reality of is people are like that in real life so we just have to deal with it or educate them.

I just hope he takes the time off to reflect on his views and learn to write in paragraphs.

For the next month I think we should all change our autosignatures to "Say NO to RGI".  That will burn him up and am sure he will see the error of his ways.

I agree with the points made by 2up 2 down, dislexic landlord and drdes and feel compelled to make a few further observations in respect of this development -

Firstly, it has often been mentioned that there is  the ability to mute members if one no longer wishes to see their postings, surely if someone feels strongly enough they could have have made use of this facility.

Secondly, I personally have always viewed Paul's postings as occasionally helpful, and at worst, like watching some reality TV excesses - cringeworthy, but often entertaining (probably for all the wrong reasons!)

Finally, I respectfully suggest that banning him and only then talking to him is the wrong way round - I believe any other system/structure would first give warnings and the opportunity to desist, only then followed by such punishment deemed appropriate if no change was forthcoming.

I have been in many discussions along with Paul and struggle to restrain myself as my political ideologies are very far removed from his. But that is the crux of the matter. This is not a political forum. Although the issues we discuss are affected by policy, therefore  politics, we should be able  to discuss these without ramming our personal beliefs down other people's throats.  I resist the temptation  to hijack threads with a political debate with him as that is unfair to everyone involved so I choose to gloss over them but I have been left reeling at times from some of his comments. I have actually felt that he believes he is quite guarded here and in real life my imagination leads me to believe he is capable of some deeply unpleasant rhetoric.

Now it would not occur to me to complain but I am a middle aged white woman who can view him as a harmless relic from that vantage. Also it is not my forum so I leave it to others to manage.   Yet we do not know the background or anything of the personal lIves of anyone here.  Free speech comes with responsibilities. If I were foreign  for example or married to someone who is (I was once) I  might find my experience in this forum somewhat more challenging to say the least. Same  if I fell ill or had a disability or fell on hard times and had to claim benefits or was personally close to someone in that position.

Whilst we have no idea of the nature of the complaints the site moderators have had to digest I would personally trust that they have been upheld on good grounds. It is simply not on to label whole groups of  people and make sweeping generalisations about them.

I am not entirely sure how one best deals with someone like Paul but I can see how he could potentially have caused distress to a lot of others who also need our consideration for fair treatment.

Please can I ask if this thread is going to be visible to him as I am not sure I am comfortable with that.

    Hi DL,

If you are referring to the landlord with the initials FW, then I can confirm to you that he was banned from this forum.

Thanks.  A lot goes on behind the scenes that doesn't see the light of day.  Nick endeavours to run a very fair and equitable platform here.  Any moderation decisions Nick makes always bear in mind the 95% of people who read the site, but never comment on it.
