Damp Meter / Damp Detector Recommendations

    Hello Smile

Does anyone use their own damp meter / damp detector in their rentals? I can see ones on Amazon at £15 - £18 and the ones in Screwfix are £90+ - so guessing there is a bit of difference between them!

Any recommendations or advice really appreciated.

    Thank you,

    Amanda

Missed adding - it's to check a wall where paint is bubbling Smile

Those on Amazon for up to £20 should be sufficient for your purpose, be guided by the reviews for the one best suited to your needs.

If the paint is bubbling you may want to check around it, including the other side the wall to see where any damp may be originating from.

A few years ago I purchased one of these

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003...UTF8&psc=1

It has a setting to switch between timber and brick.

I also got one of these to check cold spots in a room (you can also tell how hot a cup of tea is before drinking!!)

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007...UTF8&psc=1

As they don't get much frequent use, I tend to disconnect the battery after each time I've used them.

This type of detector is very useful for measuring humidity in a room if there's a problem with condensation/mould build up. I'm quite surprised how cheap that one is - I always thought they were usually the wrong side of £100.

Does your version have a moisture reading part as well as a temperature sensor? Thanks.

No, it just displays the temperature

I've got a few of these dotted around the house

A damp meter doesn’t really measure damp, it measures The conductivity between the two probes. Sometimes this is caused by damp, and sometimes by other matters, eg lead paint is a good conductor of electricity and can give a false reading.

if no obvious signs of damp such as mould, loose paper, plaster etc, place your flat hand on the area, you will feel the cold and damp better than any meter.
