    Housing Refugees

My local council have made an appeal to PRS landlords to drop their rents by at least 15% to enable refugees tenant them.

They committed to the government that they would house 50 people last year, but only managed less than 10 due to the lack of suitable property.

I personally couldn't afford to do that and in any case do not take HB/UC tenants.

Do any other landlords on this forum let property to this type of tenant?

I was approached about 18 mths ago by someone on the refugee support network. It was intimated if i took in a refugee it would be enhanced rates and background support.  I said yes in principle but wanted to see the detail . I was referred to the relevant rep in the council who was dealing with it. I asked some basic questions of him and received no reply . I chased but received no reply. About 2 months later I got an apology and said they were still working on the detail but would get back to me -  but he never did

I asked around my area to get feedback on whether they would be accepted into the community. The response was by and large negative.

I paraphrase `politely`  what the majority - but not all -  said

``Don`t you dare put them in a queue in front of me. I`ve been waiting years with you  for a place but no one takes DSS anymore . I hate the way the council give them preferential treatment while i have to use foodbanks and cant get a place  My kids need a secure place to live.  Ive been  stuck in a one bed 1st floor flat for years . They are growing now . Its not good . Life is very tough . Yes they have their own problems and i sympathise but my problems are just as bad .They wont be welcome i`m afraid on this estate . The government should sort out its own housing problems first with its own people . Its just not F^%$***  fair  ``

Unfortunately that would be the response of most especially now the PRS is under wholesale attack by Govt.

The milk of human kindness has run dry such is the housing crisis caused in the main by mass uncontrolled immigration.

The UK population does not want to import the problems of the world to its shores

A limited programme for admitting genuine refugees is something that should be possibly done.

It will however cause much resentment to those who are struggling to achieve accommodation themselves

As I suggested the cup containing the milk of human kindness doesn't exactly runneth over anymore!

These people aren't refugees they are economic migrants unless of course they have been taken from refugee camps in the nearest safe countries to Syria by the British Govt.

Or have magically been able to arrive in the UK direct from Syria.

If they have crossed the Med then they were illegal immigrants to the EU and should be deported to the nearest safe country they departed from

A genuine refugee taken from a camp is a completely different proposition to an economic migrant.

Trouble is few LL will wish to house them.

There are more than enough other tenants who will pay full market rents

I doubt many LL feel in any way predisposed to housing refugees due to the way Govt is attacking LL from all quarters.

Feel sorry for the genuine refugees, but the PRS is not really where they should be housed

Social housing is where they should go and tough luck on British nationals waiting for council accommodation.

Is that actually supposed to be funny? I'm amazed your ignorant comment has passed the moderator.

Yes. let's blow some kids to bits and burn what's left of them.  Now imagine they were white British. Not so funny anymore is it?

Yes a bit insensitive I think!

However the answer to the world's problems is not to import the human fallout of these problems to UK shores.

There is a case to be made for a limited number of genuine refugees to be taken from the refugee camps located in the nearest safe countries adjacent to conflict countries.

ANY current refugee that attempts to migrate illegally into Europe should be stopped and deported to the safe country whence they came from!

They are economic migrants as soon as they leave a safe country.

Most of the countries surrounding the conflict countries are safe countries.

Though it is remarkable that many of the rich Arab countries that are deemed to be safe refuse to accept refugees to their countries and yet the West is expected to take them on.

There remains the continent of Africa that is easy to walk along, so no risk of drowning in inhospitable seas, there are lots of safe countries there.

Of course those countries don't have the welfare and social arrangements that the West gives to all that make it to their country with the UK having probably the best welfare facilities

So perhaps that might be a reason why economic migrants attempt to reach the UK!?

Refugees should be looked after in the nearest safe countries.

A limited programme of allowing refugees from camps to come to the UK should be paid for out of the foreign aid budget

This would enable market rents to be paid to LL to house these limited numbers of refugees.

That might encourage LL to key to genuine refugees.

I would let to a genuine refugee if market rents were achievable

I will NOT let to an economic migrant who has departed from a safe country.

So only those taken directly from a refugee camp should be housed at market rents.

    Otherwise forget it!

What happened to those good old British traditions of decency, fair-play & tolerance?

    Agreed.

But with people like some of the other posters on this thread, it makes me despair of some people's attitudes.

Two of them in particular seem to be devoid of any humanity.

I'm sure they'll both be along shortly...
