How to choose a property accountant

Hi, this is my first post here. I've found property tribes such useful and often entertaining reading so thank you.

Can anyone please advise me on best way to choose a property accountant, preferably one who'd also be able to advise on strategy based on individual circumstances?

I'm pretty up to date on theory of recent tax changes but I'm still a newbie.

I normally go by recommendations - can you recommend yours?

And how much should I expect to pay (assuming advice and accounts for ltd co with two directors and one btl).

    Thanks!

dont use optimise.  I have lodged a formal complaint against them (which they have ignored).

    @Cruz

Rental Income Tax Advisors (RITA) are the preferred tax partner of both Property Tribes and the Residential Landlords Association.

You can find all their details or click through to their website via the banner at the top of the page.

@Joe Bloggs  What has been the problem with Optimise, if you don't mind me asking?

    hi Vanessa,

    no problem at all.

I did my own accounts and returns myself for years before appointing Optimise so knew they were wrong most latterly in their company house annual returns (I think most people would have been oblivious to their errors).  rather than admitting their errors they told untruths.  when this was reported to Louise she terminated our agreement unilaterally without giving the contractual required notice.  how can an organisation improve if thats how they deal with positive criticism?  Louise (the boss) then ignored my formal complaints!

    this is my review:

terrible insincere and incompetent service. very defensive when their mistakes are pointed out and ignore complaints. unprofessional.

the boss Louise isn't an accountant at all even though she dealt with most of my questions.  she states she is a member of CIPS:

    https://www.cips.org/en/membership/membership-search/

But according to their search engine isn't.  its a tin pot organisation anyway for '...PROCUREMENT & SUPPLY...' so nothing to do with accountancy.

My new accountant (who so far is excellent) ....

Use a local firm, and as property taxation is becoming increasing complicated Id suggest finding one who specialises in property. I think the days of a jack-of-all-trades type accountant are gone.

Also have a look in their office car park and if you see VAT or TAX on any of the car number plates then avoid!
