    Intelligent Finance Security Issue

Message for all PT Members that bank with IF

I just went to login to my online banking and I was asked for all sorts of personal data including my plan security code. Thinking that was strange I logged out and went back to google to check the link I used. It transpires that the site that google brings up at the top of the page is a known scam site, I say known because when I called IF to raise the issue they told me they had known about it for a few weeks and were trying to get it removed.

When I asked why IF had not informed their customers as soon as it became known I was told that they do not have a process in place to do that but that they were working on getting it removed. I must admit I was stunned that they thought it was perfectly OK to have not told their customers. Their advice was to make sure I typed in the the address if.com and did not use Google. This is something I have never had to worry about with IF, this is the first time in over 10yrs that I have almost been caught out like this.

When you actually look at the site address for the 1st entry on Google you can see that it is not right but I missed that this morning (never had to worry about such a thing before). The login page that the fraudulent link takes you two looks exactly like the real one, it was only when after logging in and it taking me to a screen that asks for all the extra info that i realised somethng was not right. Just to make sure I had not compromised anything I logged in via the official site and changed my password.

Just thought I would let people know as IF will not be doing that!

    Regards

    Steve

    Thanks Steve.

I read somewhere yesterday that, as Christmas approaches, there is a massive increase in scams, so it's important to be vigilant at all times.

I rang IF back to confirm what else should do as I had actually logged in via the scam site. The lady spoke to that time had actually been caught out herself by the same site on Mon, she advised me to change all my security details (login, security questions, security code) and not just my password. This I have now done. She also stated that in the event that monies were stolen the bank would refund any losses and that I should send an email via Secure Message FAO of the Security Dept highlighting my concerns which I have just done.

Ramping up the scams as we approach Xmas makes sense (from a crooks perspective), with so much shopping being done online now there is plenty of scope for getting caught out. It is the first time I have ever got caught out (first time for every thing) and it has certainly refocused my attention. Let's hope that Santa does not bring these scamsters the presents they are hoping for this Xmas!

    Thanks for sharing Steve

Have a look at the browser address when you log in as well.It should be https and also download Rapport if IF offer it, as extra protection.

You can also add flagfox (if you use Firefox) to your browser, this shows the flag of where the server is located - it can visually notify you of a change and if the site is not who it seems to be.

    Simon,

Not looking at the browser address was a 'school boy error' on my part and I should have known better, I will drop IF another SM to see what software, if any, they can provide. Never heard of Rapport but that said I am not up on that kind of thing any way. :-0

    Phil,

Flagfox is also new to me and I do use FF on my non Apple kit so I will look in to that as well.

Thank you both for your tips.

Rapport is offered by most of the main banks with their internet banking. It's free and I've no idea what it does but its another barrier.

    Simon,

Your "I've no idea what it does' really made me laugh. :-)

I think Rapport flashes up a warning when you enter a password it recognises on a page that it doesn't recognise. Flagfox is a new on on me though - will take a look.

Thanks for the warning, btw - I'm with IF too but I always access the site via my bookmarks. Good to be kept aware though!
