Non-financial rewards of being a landlord

Being a landlord can be stressful and if the media and pressure groups are anything to go by, we are hated too. But not by our own tenants.

I just had this lovely message from one of mine:

"Hi Alison, just wanted to let you know that both the sockets and the security light have been fixed and working, Thanks for caring."

That's made my day. The people side of providing homes as a landlord is part of the pleasure. The negative reporting, hostility and lack of government support make me want to give up sometimes. It's my lovely tenants that keep me going. If I'm forced to sell up, they are the people who will lose out most. I'm damned if I'm going to allow that.

    Great post and sentiments Alison.

We are service providers and have many legal obligations, but if we undertake them with responsibility and care, then we are providing a home for someone - a place where they can feel safe and secure.  That is a very positive thing to be able to do for someone who cannot afford their own home, or does not wish to purchase a property.

Landlords play an important role in the private rented sector - they provide choice.  We should have a mutually respectful relationship with our tenants, treat them like customers, and, just like any other business, go the extra mile.

There are other types of rewards, not just financial, and they all make being a landlord worthwhile.

The good face of the Landlord is never seen

I arranged the Funeral last year for one of my Tenants who passed away

She had no family and few friends so I did it because it was the right thing to do.
