Paying SDLT by credit card to HMRC

I will  be buying a house for cash and wanted to ask if anybody knows if it's possible to pay the stamp duty (SDLT) to HMRC with a credit card and if they do accept credit card payment would they take that payment as the "Cash advance" portion of the cards credit limit? My bank's credit card department is unsure.

    Hi Jake,

You can pay SDLT by credit card but you can only make a limited number of tax payments on a credit card per year.  You can pay SDLT direct on line using a credit card.

    Pay Stamp Duty Land Tax

Also, if your solicitor agrees that you can pay by credit card for your completion fees of stamp duty and legal fees, then they can accept payment via that method and disburse the money.

    Hello Vanessa

Thank you for your reply. I'm trying to see if I can manage to free up a little bit of cash by trying to put some expenses on a credit card balance so that I'll have some funds available straight after purchase and the stamp duty would be a convenient amount to use up some available credit at a reasonable interest rate.

With regards to solicitors making the payment are you aware of solicitors having taking payment from a client via credit card and then using that payment to pay HMRC before as this would be very convenient, I've mentioned it to my solicitors but they seemed unsure and didn't seem to think it was possible although I'm sure they'd try to help if they can and they're able to accept credit card payment for their legal fees which is a big help. Thanks again for your suggestion!
