Prince William vows to tackle rogue landlords

Prince William vowed to take a stand against slum landlords yesterday as he visited one of the most deprived streets in Britain with his wife Kate.

The royal couple were said to have been ‘deeply affected’ as they were given a tour of mould-ridden houses left in a dangerous state in Blackpool.

They were highlighting troubling issues surrounding multiple occupancy homes unfit for habitation that litter the once prosperous resort.

William and Kate toured homes where children had lived in squalor at the mercy of unscrupulous private landlords. They visited Kirby Road, where 16-year-old Sasha Marsden was stabbed by her killer 58 times and dumped in an alleyway in 2013.

One empty house – which was formerly a B&B business called the Williams Inn – was covered in black mould and graffiti, with debris littering the floor and children’s toys and a small coat left behind. The duke and duchess, who was wearing a £940 Sportmax coat and high-heeled boots, were asked to walk on planks to avoid dangerous rotting floorboards, while water dripped from the living room ceiling.

It was one of many houses bought by private landlords and used for multiple occupancy homes to take advantage of housing benefit.

Good for William and Katherine!  Rogue landlords have no place in the PRS and tarnish the reputation of all landlords.  I am sure that William will speak to all related parties and stake-holders and get a clear picture of what is going on before he makes any further comments.

This is quite ironic when you think about it

Most of the wealth the royal family has comes from land and property and William and co are getting millions to do up Kensington palace

The problem i see here is every landlord hater will see this as a pat on the back for there hate against us all

The Royals should stay out of politics.

I'm a through-and-through Royalist and happily took the Queen's shilling and would do so again, but before our future King speaks out his advisers would do well to read this excellent report from the NLA, as if nothing else it shows that the PRS contributes the think end of £4billion to the public purse and hence to his pocket.  God Save the Queen!

In terms of PRS taxes paid I have seen elsewhere that around £8 billion pa is paid to HMRC by landlords just on rental profits - though you do say that your figs are estimates.

There is also the VAT on repairs/maintenance etc - plus CGT where applicable - plus SDLT and the newish 3% surcharge.

As a sector PRS rebates to Treasury almost all the LHA paid to PRS.

By contrast SRS pays nil tax and the running costs of the sector are thus a net burden.

I took the queens shilling twice but I get sick of seeing this sort of stint

HRH needs to see the other side of landlords so he can see that some of us do a good job

it’s the drip drip effect that is so unfair

    never a good landlord story

    very one sided and unfair

With all due respect to HRH he can only make up his mind on such issues from what he is fed by the media.  Of course it is in all of our interests to get rid of the rogue element among landlords but I think I speak for most of us when I say that such conditions are something I have never ever seen and I cannot imagine what planet rogue landlords are living on to even think of letting people live in such conditions.

Hopefully Prince William is not led to believe standards like this are the norm and I hope that someone will put over to him the perspective of  we 'normal' landlords who break our necks to have repairs on our gorgeous properties done the same day if humanly possible. He needs a balanced view.

His granny is in fact the biggest landlord in this country so if he wants to make a difference he could start by speaking out against the unfair leasehold system that his family has massive vested interest in.

I think it’s a bit of the kettle calling the pot black

he is from the landlord class

it just give councils and govt more ammunition to hammer ever landlord the good and the bad

but it’s alway the good that suffers

the name landlord comes from his own class

I agree. William and Kate traipseing through the HMO really annoyed me.

Yes, there are a lot of poor people in this country who can’t afford a decent home. Did they not know this before?

Was this some publicity stunt by the authorities to justify whacking more tax on landlords? By the way how much tax does HRH pay?
