    hi sam
Being in the trade (plumber) and everything else usually, i've never actually used these types of sites.(but i get plenty of sales calles from these sites telling me i must subscribe to them!!!!)
I sometimes get chatting to customers that have put up requests for jobs on these types of site and never get anything back.
Most established trades men won't use this type of thing as nearly all work comes from being recomended, repeat business and just good old fashioned networking.
Sorry i can't add much from the customers end!
    regards john

I have actually used the site to find a gardener, decorator, electrician and plumber for my last refurb as my decorator couldn't take on the job etc. etc. I had also lost my previous builder, but got the new one through recommendation and he was good.
Anyway, I got the first responses from ratedpeople within 15 minutes and the max. amount of 3 responses within a day. I then met all the tradesman at my house. I picked them not only based on price but also on qualification, professionalism in the way they presented themselves and if they came across as trustworthy etc.. So there was a bit of gutfeeling envolved but I also checked the feedback from other customers on the ratedpeople website.
In the end I was very happy with the gardeners and decorators. I have kept the gardener on for maintenance jobs and will use the decorators again soon. (BTW - you can see the results on the photos I put up here or this months YPN magazine). The electrician, also qualified plumber, did a good job, but it was hard work to ensure everything was listed in his quote and he would not charge me extra for every tiny bit I might have missed to put down.
In summary I would say the side has helped me.

I have put a job on under the hammer in an area of the country I don't have many contacts but found that the experience of the people on it was insufficient n questioning them and ended up using the yellow pages to find a suitable trades person

Yes, ratedpeople encourages people to give feedback and people tent to let you know all about it if they were happy or not with the service provided. In a way you could say it's better to trust 10+ positive feedbacks then a recommendation from someone.
Anyway, I guess ratedpeople provides a good service for investors who don't live close to the properties. Even if you have a LA who can recommend tradesman, they may not always be available.
