Recent activity & forcing what floats to the top

The following was pinched from another discussion. As it would have been a tangent to post this there and it is really a housekeeping issue I am moving the discussion to here.
What does it mean to revive a thread? Are you suggesting that by bouncing it to the top of the active list it is somehow helpful?
As the number of users grows the number of new people is small compared to the existing users. Needless activity just to push something to the top of the active list dings the existing users in general and hits the most the active users. They need to check threads to realize that nothing has really happened.
While you are the co-owner of the site the power to bounce something to the top is open to anyone. If people take up the behavior it starts to really mess with the flow of the conversations.

Just reviving this great thread for new members to get their teeth into!
Ning is not all that great when it comes to maintaining a list of what is new per user. In addition it has no way to mark a thread or a user as something to skip. Hence we need to be careful about churning up activity just for the same of pushing an old topic to the top of a list. If there is something of substance that someone wants to add they will do so and the thread will pop to the top on its own.
    Other viewpoints?

Also happy to chat on the phone. Pay It Forward; my way of giving back through sharing. Click on the link: PropertyFortress.com/Ask-John to book a time. I will call you at the time you selected. Nothing to buy. Just be prepared with your questions so we can use the 20 minutes wisely.

Did you see my previous reply to this issue John?
We've creating a new category called "Must read - best of Property Tribes". If anyone wants a thread to be singled out for posterity, they can let us know and we will transfer it into that category so that new members can access the best of the forum via one category.
With the limitations of Ning, I am afraid this is the best we can do.
    Hope it helps?

I saw the reply to the new category. I did not check to see which was older.
I agree that Ning is the limiting factor here.
Assuming there is a list of rules or a thread with for new people to read before they start we should put something there that bouncing a thread so it has recent activity is counter productive.

Thanks John. I was the only one bouncing threads and I was mainly doing it because I thought it would be helpful to new members to see the best discussions on the front page. I understand your issues with it, which is why we created this new category. Now new members can find all the meaty discussions under one roof.
