We've bought a shop with living accommodation to divide into a lock-up retail unit and 2 flats. On requesting the regional electricity distribution network provider, Western Power, to quote to divide the electrical supply so that we can arrange for two additional meters, they want to change the manner in which it enters the building. -
The shop is the second in a small suburban parade and the electricity supply to all of them comes from underground at one end and then runs along under the eaves to drop into each unit. Ours is the second shop in the parade and the single phase electricity supply comes along under the facia of our neighbour's shop and then into our property. Western Power is saying that we should now create an individual supply from under the pavement in front of our building at a cost of around £3.5k.
When we've done previous similar conversions, we didn't come across this problem and didn't budget for more than £1.5k to separate the supplies.
Has anyone come across a similar problem? Should we just swallow the extra cost or is there a legal and safe alternative? We do want each unit to be able to choose its own electricity supplier.
Singe phase supply says it all . You have a problem with load (overloading the supply cable ) and fuse.

From the sound of it £3.5k does not sound to bad. If a single phase supply it’s probably 100amp max, therefore not enough to run retail plus 2 flats, especially if any of the existing or proposed heating is electric. You might well end up with other unknown reinstatement builders costs if altering the existing supply with the same route. There / and your cost risk is lower with new from the pavement and no other 3rd party to deal with
Thanks for this - there is no proposed electric heating but I reckon we're going to have to accept the situation as it is. We were surprised because when we did a very similar conversion three years ago but needing just one extra supply rather than two, there was no groundwork and the cost was £650 so I'd estimated around £1500 this time.
I forget the jargon & terminology, but connections can now also be done by other contractors apart from the regional network. I don't know if it's gonna be one of those scenarios where you might get a good quote for doing a new-build block of 20 flats as opposed to a relatively piddly little job like this one (no disrespect).
